Group Honors Huntington
An All-American City!
Michael Gartland

Huntington is technically a town, but that didn't stop Huntington, Long Island from being named one of the nation's top 10 All-American cities for 2002.

Huntington Chamber of Commerce
Long Island Citizens for Community Values
Long Island Center for Business & Professional Women

The town was awarded the honored by the Denver-based National Civic League, a nonprofit that honors areas that encourage empowering its residents. The civic league who began presenting awards 53 years ago, made its announcement during the organization's annual ceremony. The All-American City Award represents a public relations coup that could spell new business and increased funding for Huntington. It is also a formal acknowledgment that Huntington's social programs are working. Three times before -- in 1971, 1972 and 2001 -- Huntington had been a finalist for the honor, but fell short. This year what ultimately pushed the town through the pack to the winner's circle were three community-based projects that demonstrated excellent civic collaboration. It was Huntington's work with at-risk youth that the town proudly cited in its presentation, said Denis Sneden, chief executive officer of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and head of the town's effort to apply for the award.

Town Supervisor, Frank Petrone said; "Huntington is a great place --- Now the whole country knows it!"
